Joe Big 5 Sporting Goods
Recently (in February, 2012) there was a sign up in the shoe section which stated that if you join the email newsletter list you would get a 10% off coupon for a purchase. The sign showed the website to join the newsletter list. Apparently it never occurred to anyone at Big 5 corporate that people now have the Internet with them as they shop.
I took out my iPhone, joined the mail list as directed, and waited 10 min. for the email with the coupon to come in before completing the purchase. No email arrived. I wondered if there outbound mail server was overloaded and that mine was caught in the queue.
I then brought this to a manager's attention who told me that it takes a week for the email to come in... I explained to him that this is misleading to have the sign promoting the coupon in the store without any indication that it cannot be used on today's purchase.
When I told him that I joined the newsletter, and have been waiting for the email to come in and asked would he honor the 10% due to this customers experience with this delay he said no very abruptly. There was no acknowledgment of the disconnect between the sign promoting the newsletter and the delay experience which I went through, and others must have as well.
